A few 'Bushisms' and other sad sad quotes...

These are things our president has actually said...it would be funny except its, well, not.

* GEORGE W BUSH, "One of the greatest things about books is sometimes there are some fantastic pictures"-- U.S. News and World Report; January 3, 2000.

* GEORGE W BUSH, "If this was a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator."-- Washington D.C. December 18, 2002.

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "I'm not going to talk about what I did as a child. What I am going to talk about -- and I am going to say this consistently -- [is that] it is irrelevant what I did 20 to 30 years ago. What's relevant is that I have learned from any mistakes I made. I do not want to send signals to anybody that what Gov. Bush did 30 years ago is cool to try."
--Gov. Bush in an interview with WMUR-TV in New Hampshire, when asked if he had used "drugs, marijuana, cocaine"

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "If affirmative action means what I just described, what I'm for, then I'm for it." —St. Louis, Mo., October 18, 2000

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "I think if you know what you believe, it makes it a lot easier to answer questions. I can't answer your question." —In response to a question about whether he wished he could take back any of his answers in the  first debate. Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Oct. 4, 2000 (Thanks to Peter Feld.)

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream." —LaCrosse, Wis., Oct. 18, 2000

* GEORGE W. BUSH, (1988) - "You fucking son of a bitch. I saw what you wrote. We're not going to forget this."  A drunken George W., storming into a Mexican diner in Dallas, and approaching Al Hunt (Wall Street Journal editor). Al was dining with his wife and 4 year old son, when Dubya interrupted cursing for several minutes in front of everyone.

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." —Saginaw, Mich., Sept. 29, 2000

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "  "I don't know whether I'm going to win or not. I think I am.  I do know I'm ready for the job. And, if not, that's just the way it goes." —Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 21, 2000

* GEORGE W. BUSH, "We cannot let terriers* and rogue nations hold this nation hostile
(hostage) or hold our allies hostile.''  (There is no source for this quote, so I can't actually attest for its truth but it was too funny to leave out...)

* KARL ROVE,  Bush's long-time political guru and White House advisor: "As people do better, they start voting like Republicans...unless they have too much education and vote Democratic,  which proves there can be too much of a good thing."

(kinda makes "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" seem kinda, well, bland)

Oh dear God No. Another Loop hole?

This story is taked directly from USA Today, 7/12/04 (www.usatoday.com)

Counterterrorism officials look to postpone elections

WASHINGTON — Counterterrorism officials are looking into the possibility of postponing the November presidential election if there is a terrorist attack at election time, Newsweek reported Sunday.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned last week that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network may attack within the USA to try to disrupt the election.

The magazine cited unnamed sources who said the Department of Homeland Security asked the Justice Department for advice last week.

Newsweek said DeForest Soaries, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, wants Ridge to ask Congress to pass legislation giving the government power to cancel or reschedule a federal election. Soaries said New York suspended primary elections on the day of the Sept. 11 attacks, but the federal government does not appear to have that authority.

The disclosure comes only a few days after U.S. authorities said they believe that al-Qaeda is planning a "large-scale" attack in the USA aimed at disrupting the presidential campaign and November elections.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Thursday that the party conventions were among the possible targets of such an attack, although he said there had been no particular threat to either convention. Democrats meet in Boston later this month; the Republican convention begins in late August in New York City.

Ridge said the intelligence was gathered from "credible" sources, but he acknowledged that it did not yield any specific information about a possible attack.

U.S. officials have been particularly concerned about an attack during the presidential campaign since the Madrid railway bombings in March. The bombings, which killed nearly 200 people, occurred on the eve of national elections. Spain's ruling party was ousted.

Does this make anyone else a little nervous? It is just like Bush to cover all his bases 'just in case' and then have that very issue turn out in his favor. The scariest part for me is the word 'cancel' in the fourth paragraph. I can just see old W now dancing around in a half shirt singing into a hairbrush 'oopse I did it again, I played with your heart, got lost in the game.' But seriously folks this sounds like something really big might be in the works here. There is the 'good of the country' and then there is 'sick with power.' Of course it makes sense to postpone the election if a large scale attack makes it difficult or impossible for large groups of people to get to the polls. My question is, what are they going to consider an attack or threat of an attack. Imminent danger can mean a lot of things and can be construed in lots of different ways, lest we forget the 'weapons of mass distruction' debacle. (I can just see W calling in a bomb threat to the Washington Monument the night before the election...) Will they be able to put the election off indefinately, or is there a set time frame to reschedule. For now let's just all keep our ears to the ground and our eyes peeled... we cant let them pull the wool over our eyes this time. This is our America.

Woooopee for Whoopi

Whoopi Goldberg speaking at John Kerry's Democratic fundraiser last week, used President Bush's name as a sexual reference, and was fired by Slim-Fast. (The main offices of Slim-Fast are located in Florida. The governor of Florida is Jeb Bush, George W.'s brother. HMMMM. ) The company was afraid that her comments might have offended some customers. Offended them by using the word bush instead or er, pubis or something or because W is such a stand-up guy I can't say.

I don't care what slim-fast says, I'm with you Whoopi!

A sentiment I wish more people shared

This essay was written by Wade Edwards (son of John Edwards) in the fall of his junior year.  It was entered into the National Conversation Essay Contest, conducted by the Voice of America and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Wade was one of ten national winners.  In March 1996, three weeks before his death, he attended the award ceremonies in Washington, D.C., which included a visit with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in the private residence at the White House.

FANCY CLOTHES AND OVERALLS

BY WADE EDWARDS

A little boy and his father walk into a firehouse. He smiles at people standing outside. Some hand pamphlets to his father. They stand in line. Finally, they go together into a small booth, pull the curtain closed, and vote. His father holds the boy up and shows him which levers to move.

"We're ready, Wade. Pull the big lever now."

With both hands, the boy pulls the lever. There it is: the sound of voting. The curtain opens. The boy smiles at an old woman leaving another booth and at a mother and daughter getting into line. He is not certain exactly what they have done. He only knows that he and his father have done something important. They have voted.

This scene takes place all over the country.

    "Pull the lever, Yolanda."

"Drop the ballot in the box for me, Pedro."

Wades, Yolandas, Pedros, Nikitas, and Chuis all over the United States are learning the same lesson: the satisfaction, pride, importance, and habit of voting. I have always gone with my parents to vote. Sometimes lines are long. There are faces of old people and young people, voices of native North Carolinians in southern drawls and voices of naturalized citizens with their foreign accents. There are people in fancy clothes and others dressed in overalls. Each has exactly the same one vote. Each has exactly the same say in the election. There is no place in America where equality means as much as in the voting booth.

My father took me that day to the firehouse. Soon I will be voting. It is a responsibility and a right. It is also an exciting national experience. Voters have different backgrounds, dreams, and experiences, but that is the whole point of voting. Different voices are heard.

As I get close to the time I can register and vote, it is exciting. I become one of the voices. I know I will vote in every election. I know that someday I will bring my son with me and introduce him to one of the great American experiences: voting.

Bush says it's ok to torture 'terrorists' kiddies wonder 'how does this make us better than they are?'

Time Magazine (June 21 2004) reports that the 'administration has been quietly but fundamentally reshaping America's stance on torture. Contradicting 50 years of policy governing the treatment of detainees captured during conflict, the government has released memos that meticulously list all the laws against torture, then offer methods of evading them. Although the White House insists the documents were abstract musings rather than policy changes, they seem to suggest that there is at least some ambiguity about how captured persons should be treated.' 'While these memos don't explicitly endorse the use of torture' they don't do the opposite either. Although the President 'does not recall' signing off on these memos, he has been quoted as saying "Its going to be vital for us to use any means at our disposal, basically, to meet our objective." President Bush declared that US soldiers would abide by the spirit of the Geneva Conventions, but Taliban and al-Qaeda held in cuba do not qualify as prisoners of war and are therefor not subject to the treaty. '

I guess that means using dogs and sleep deprivation, specifically disallowed by Geneva...

Apparently 'terrorists' were not represented at the Geneva Conventions, so they don't have to be treated under the guidelines on handling prisoners of war underlined therein-- whatever that means. The lines are definitely blurred in my mind, and I'm not a 21 year old soldier 'at war' trying to please his commanders, trying to do a good job so I can look at my self in the mirror when I come home. As for our leaders, our generals and our Secretary of Defense (to name a few), it seems they can do whatever they want with no regard for history or the future, going to war against the will of the UN, for example. Hell why not throw peace agreements and fair play out the window too-- no one is looking. (Geneva? Why that's nowhere near Texas!) It is completely unbelievable to Americans when we see our troops being dragged burning through the streets and hung on bridges for everyone to see. We cry at the thought of those images... how can we say a word when our own government is part and parcel doing the same damn thing. I can't fathom it. It cheapens everything we stand for as a country to watch our commander and chief act willy-nilly with human lives, ours or theirs. So lets go back to the beginning, I ask the same question, what makes us think that we are better than they are, how can we claim we are fighting the good fight, when the evidence shows we are bringing as much terror on others as they are on us. I will not go so far as to say that the United States of America is run by terrorists, I can't say that because I love it too much, but if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck it must be... George W. Bush (cooking and eating lame duck since 1995.)

This country is unrecognizable from its state a mere four years ago.

Is this what is really going on

President Bush During Pennsylvania Bus Tour Visit--Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Kutztown, Pennsylvania

Bush: I'm here for a reason -- I'm here to let you know that I want to serve the people of this country for four more years. (Applause.) I'm here to let you know -- and I have a reason to ask for your help and your vote -- I want this country to be safer and stronger and better for every one of our citizens. (Applause.) (FORGET ABOUT THE TROOPS DYING BECAUSE SADAM TRIED TO KILL YOUR DADDY...)

I'm also the first to admit that I can't win without your help. So I'm here to ask for your help. I would like for you all -- (applause) -- not only am I asking for the vote, I'm asking for you to register your friends and neighbors to vote. And then when you ask -- when you register them, you might get them to vote for old George W., while they're at it. (Applause.) (WHO ELSE IS WONDERING IF HE ASKED ALL THE BLACK PEOPLE TO COVER THEIR EARS AT THIS POINT IN THE SPEECH oh wait what am I thinking...WHAT BLACK PEOPLE?)

I'm looking forward to the campaign. I'm looking forward to the campaign. I've got plenty of energy to run a race. I know who I want to lead this country, and I'm here to ask for your help. (Applause.) (AND WE KNOW WHO WE WANT, AND HE HAS TO HAVE A CLUE, ASSHOLE.)
...
Let me tell you a couple of lessons I learned from September the 11th. We face an enemy which has hijacked a religion. They're not religious people; they've hijacked a religion. Secondly, therapy is not going to work with them. You cannot negotiate with these people, you can't discuss it. The only way to make sure America is more secure is to bring them to justice. (Applause.) Thirdly, I learned about this enemy, that they try to find soft spots in the world. They try to find safe havens. They try to burrow in and corrupt a government. They become parasitical. And that's why I laid out a doctrine that said, if you harbor a terrorist and feed one, you're just as guilty as the terrorist. (BURROW IN AND CORRUPT A GOVERNMENT, SOUNDS FAMILIAR...)

A stronger America is an America where people are working. Now, we've got some citizens here today that will help make my point. Listen, we want everybody working. That's what we want. We want people going to work, we want people putting food on their table to feed their kids. We want our entrepreneurs to feel like there's -- feel so confident about the future that they're willing to invest. (AND?)

AROUND THE HORN so to speak... this is what the 'pro' public has to say about "W"

"I support President Bush because of his commitment to our national security and his untiring efforts to support our Armed Forces. My husband serves proudly in the United States Army and is honored and humbled to serve for a Commander in Chief that has integrity, honor, braveness, compassion, and faith in God. We are both proud he is our President and we look forward to 4 more years!"

-- Shelby Sarver of Fort Polk, LA (DONT GET ME STARTED...IS SHE JOKING, HAD WE NOT GONE TO WAR WHAT WOULD SHE HAVE TO PRAISE? OH AND WHO THINKS ATTACKING A BASICALLY UNARMED NATION PROMOTES NATIONAL SECURITY-- COME ON, RAISE YOUR HAND.)

"President Bush has helped restore my faith in America. I visited New York City in Oct. 2001 and American flags were everywhere! They are still everywhere in Georgia! It’s wonderful to see American patriotism once again! Thank you Mr. President for standing strong in tough times. May God bless you."

-- Donna Hardin of Dalton, GA (YEAH BECAUSE THOSE FLAGS ARE GREAT BIG BANDAIDS AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE THEM WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT OTHER PESKY ISSUES LIKE THE ENVIORNMENT OR THE FACT THAT WE DID NOTHING ABOUT OSAMA AND RAN RIGHT INTO A WAR WITH SADDAM AND THEN WERE TRICKED INTO BELIEVING IT HAD SOMETHING WITH SEPT 11TH)

I CAN'T GO ON OR I'LL BE SICK... TALK TO YA'LL TOMORROW

* obviously the stuff in CAPS is my commentary *
** I am sorry if the presidents feelings are hurt by my calling him an asshole earlier**

And the people said it was 'Time for a Change' America doesnt have 'regimes'

Ok... I have been kind of going back and fourth with my thoughts about making this page for a while. I am scared to do it in a sense, because things have been going crazy with our government lately. People exercizing their 'rights' have become 'terrorist threats' and the Constitution of this great country has been put in a bubble by the Patriot Act. Serious acusations, I know, but these are serious times. Does George Bush think he is a revolutionary, does he really think he is doing good for the people? There is a lot I dont understand. I'm not trying to get myself arrested and questioned by doing this (by any means) so let me say here and now that this site represents my personal opinions about our president and the political goings on here in the USA. I am open to comments good or bad here, I welcome them really!

Every year I vote and call it a day, this year I want to try to really make a difference. This year it means everything. I am starting with this site and continuing by collecting money at my own campaign party this July 29th in Buffalo, NY. John Kerry may not be the second coming of the Messiah for this country, but he seems less likely to use the US army to complete personal vendetas, less likely to be clueless in times of crisis, and probably can pronounce most compound words correctly without aid. I'm even willing to go so far as to say Georgie is probably a nice guy, he just isn't fit to lead much more than cheers for his football team. (There I said it.)
